Paint correction & winter detailing in Michigan: Reversing salt damage, swirls, and dull finishes

By late January in Michigan, every dark-colored car in the state looks the same: hazy, swirly, and a few shades duller than it should be. That is not just dirt — it is bonded contamination, micro-scratches from automatic car washes, salt etching, and water spots from snow melting and refreezing on the hood. Paint correction reverses all of it.

What paint correction actually is

Paint correction is the controlled removal of a microscopic layer of damaged clear coat to expose the smooth, undamaged layer underneath. It is done with machine polishers, a sequence of cutting and polishing pads, and proper compounds — not a bottle of one-step glaze from the parts store. Done right, swirls and light scratches do not 'fill' — they are physically gone.

What we correct

  • Swirl marks from automatic car washes
  • Water spots and mineral etching
  • Salt haze and acid rain etching
  • Light to medium scratches that do not break the clear coat
  • Holograms and buffer trails from previous bad detail jobs
  • Oxidation and dull finish on older Michigan cars

Single-stage vs. multi-stage correction

Single-stage (one cut, one polish) handles light swirls and is ideal for newer cars or maintenance correction. Multi-stage (compound, polish, refine) handles deeper damage and is what we recommend before any ceramic coating — including any of our Ceramic Pro packages. Coating over swirls is the most common mistake we see; the swirls just get locked in for the life of the coating.

Why winter is the right time

Most Michigan owners wait until spring to detail. The smarter play is mid-winter: correct, coat (or wax/sealant), and let the car ride out the rest of the salt season with a slick, hydrophobic surface that flushes clean instead of staining. By April you are not chasing damage — you are maintaining a finish.
